hides photos and videos from your gallery, but they still consume storage in a hidden folder. To actually save space, disable automatic media downloads. Go to Settings > Data Usage and choose when media downloads (mobile data, Wi-Fi, roaming). Disabling auto-download is recommended to control storage use.
