Google Maps is one of the most popular and reliable mapping/navigation services, , but too many people are unaware of the full extent of the services that it can offer.

Google Maps is a web mapping service developed by Google. It offers satellite imagery, street maps, 360° panoramic views of streets (Street View), real-time traffic conditions (Google Traffic), and route planning for travelling by foot, car, bicycle and air (in beta), or public transportation.

Losing your Internet connection while travelling can be annoying, especially when you’re relying on your phone to give you directions where to go.

It’s a good idea to plan ahead for these types of situations by downloading maps for offline use in Google Maps. Once you have downloaded an area, you’ll be able to get directions and view points of interest for that region even without an Internet connection.

While using the offline version, you won’t be able to to get real traffic information, walking and cycling directions, it’s only the driving directions that will be given, and obviously viewing nearby places.

It’s also important to remember that these maps eventually expire and have to be updated every 30 days so that changes that could have happened over that period are added for example a new street, a new bar may have opened up, e.t.c. To see the areas you have saved and when they expire, open Google Maps, tap the menu icon, and select “Offline areas.”
How to Download an Offline Map Area
Launch the Google Maps app on your Android phone or iPhone. Make sure you’re signed into your Google account.
Search for the city you’d like to download.
Tap the bar at the bottom of the screen with the name of the place you’ve just searched for.
Tap the button that says “Download.”
Google will then show you a map of the area and ask if you’d like to download it. Tap “Download” again to confirm. This will be using available WiFi or data plan.
After the above steps, just turn on navigation mode as long as you are within the downloaded area, you won’t be required t have an active internet access in order to get directions to your destination.
